If Caitlyn Jenner’s DNA still contains the XY chromosome, is s/he still a man? S/he makes a beautiful woman, but I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the biology aspect of it. Is it merely an outward, or cosmetic, change?
These days, we can certainly transform our outward appearance to virtually anything. Michael Jackson proved it. But, unless our DNA is transplanted, we can’t change the gender we were born with. (OK, maybe in science fiction it’s possible.) Which means, biologically speaking, Caitlyn Jenner is still male.
Which begs the questions, Who gets to decide our gender?
Food for thought: S/he didn’t make herself. I didn’t make myself. You didn’t make yourself. Perhaps, however, in these times biology no longer matters?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Caitlyn was assigned male at birth but identifies as a woman so the correct term is trans woman which would differ from just being called a woman because women are assigned female at birth and feel like they are females their entire lives. I still believe XY make us female and male but who we truly feel as a gender is mental. I can remember knowing I was a girl as a child and this was before I even knew boys and girls has different bodies. I knew I was a girl because I just felt it, I can’t really put it into words other than saying it is a subconscious feeling. I believe biology still matters but more importantly differences and being tolerant of these differences matter.

Thank you for your thoughts! I can imagine how confusing it can get. Your first sentence struck me — Caitlyn was assigned male at birth, which begs the question, who/what assigned Caitlyn’s gender, and do we have the right to mess with that? I’m sure a lot of folks are asking that.

I don’t want to offend anyone’s religious views, but I personally believe God assigned Caitlyn’s gender and created her body. I believe in God but I am not familiar with the Bible but I do believe He created us how we’re supposed to be, mentally and physically, no matter what we identify as and are assigned at birth. I think people are born transgender and are born homosexual and God created people this way on purpose. If you choose to believe in God, I know I would personally do a lot of talking to him if I was born transgender because I would be very confused. In my opinion, God does not have an issue with it. I believe he creates such a diverse species to teach us to be tolerant and accepting. But if someone does not believe in God, then I believe people should be able to do whatever they want to do surgically. No one is denying the biology aspect of being transgender.

When someone denies what their body was created to be, they’re basically telling God that He messed up. Personally, I think the chromosome make up is how people should be described, no matter what they feel like they are. A cat can say it’s a dog and it can even have surgeries to make it look more like a dog, but it will never be a dog. Instead of raging against our Creator, why not embrace who He made us to be? Feelings come and go, but God is forever.
Whenever human beings rely on their own fallen nature to make decisions that contradict what God has said or done, they’re always setting themselves up in opposition to Him. What will he say when he stands before God’s throne? “I’m sorry, God, but I knew much better than you did what I should be so I took matters into my own hands.” Huh. The creation telling the Creator how to do things. Is that really wise to spit in the face of the God who created you?
